Lily Allen, the singer of West End Girl, has revealed that she is experimenting with eye movement desensitization and reprocessing therapy to help her deal with a financial compulsion.
Lily Allen has revealed she is currently in therapy to address what she has described as an unhealthy relationship with money, after admitting her spending habits have cost her large sums. The singer, 40, made the candid confession on her Miss Me? podcast alongside long time friend and co-host Miquita Oliver, explaining that she has been working through her addiction to shopping with the help of EMDR therapy.
Lily said she has been in treatment for several months and is beginning to understand how much her spending is tied to her self-worth. During the Christmas special episode, Lily explained that she recently used a therapy session to focus specifically on her compulsion to spend. She admitted that she often tries to get rid of money quickly because she struggles with feeling like she does not deserve it.
In her own words, Lily continued, explaining how EMDR therapy uses stimulation on both sides of the brain to help reframe harmful behaviors or traumatic experiences.
She claimed that she and I attempted to separate our two interests by discussing my spending and how it relates to my sense of self-worth yesterday. Let’s see how that turns out. The actress later stated, “I think I try to get rid of it because I don’t think I deserve it.”
She described the EMDR process as “life changing” and claimed to have started it about four or five months ago. According to Lily, the therapy is enabling her to separate emotional meaning from tangible objects.
The singer also mentioned how this process has helped her accept and refute the notion that expensive goods can increase her worth. The Nonmonogamummy hitmaker said EMDR has worked well for her, despite admitting she doesn’t fully understand the science behind it.
Lily confessed shortly after making a joke on the podcast about giving herself an expensive emerald ring, calling it a “little present” despite the obvious cost.
She was recently seen exiting a £120, 000 Porsche and carrying a £16, 500 Hermès handbag in London. Following a difficult time in her personal life, Lily’s admission about her struggles with overspending comes.
The star split from Stranger Things actor David Harbour late last year, with the pair confirming the end of their marriage in early 2025 following reports that David had been unfaithful during their relationship.
The couple originally got married in 2020 after meeting on the dating app Raya. The emotional fallout from the split inspired Lily’s latest album, West End Girl, which has been described as her most raw work to date.
The songs she wrote and recorded shortly after the breakup explore the betrayal that comes with broken promises.
Lily has spoken about the toll the separation took on her mental health, and previously shared that she checked into an £8,000 a week trauma facility to seek help for panic attacks after her marriage fell apart.
The singer has also admitted that she got a boob job after the split because of body confidence issues she experienced after losing weight quickly during this challenging time and imagining how she would look if she had gained it back.
She explained to The Observer, “I was concerned about becoming very bottom-heavy because I’ve always been very small up top.” I thought getting boobs would help me feel better about gaining weight. That was my justification.
