As One Direction celebrates 15 years since their appearance on the X Factor, singer Liam Payne’s sister has shared a heartbreaking tribute.
Liam Payne’s sister posted a heartbreaking message to the late singer as she marked 15 years since One Direction formed. The singer tragically died in October aged 31 after falling from the third floor of a hotel in Argentina.
He found fame on the X Factor, where he was put together with Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson and Niall Horan to form One Direction. Liam’s sister Ruth shared a photo of Liam with his siblings and parents in the same place, years apart, that they took for the band’s Story of My Life music video.
They posed for a family snap with a teenage Liam, as well as when he was much younger. Alongside the touching photos, Ruth dedicated a message to her late younger brother. She penned: “Liam this one’s for you
“Fourteen years of the “I’m in a boyband” text, in which Dad ran downstairs to tell everyone that you had been sent home again and that you had been placed in a boyband,”
Your admiration for 1D never faltered; you were so proud of what you had accomplished; part of the admiration that still exists is the support of your fans, who have supported you for 15 years. I hope you can see this.
She continued, “You never stopped loving and supporting the other boys; you were the first to praise their accomplishments after the band; you always sang their songs and spoke of their memories; they were the brothers you’d always wanted.”
“I look back on your band with all my favorite memories, and I’m proud to have witnessed your success in my 20s. One of my favorite memories was when Souts and I were having a “story of my life” video discussion at a party, and he said, “Ask him what photo of us to use,” and I turned to him and said, “Nicola’s got a mullet and I’ve got black hair in it!”
You then laughed and said, “I know, I’m absolutely howling that you convinced us to agree to reenact one of our worst photos.” We had the best time with you while we were filming that video.
“Everyday in your company was always tonic for my soul, no matter where in the world we were. From our dance shows, to small theatres, arenas to stadiums, incredible memories.”
Ruth continued to recall Liam’s other memories, including when she visited Los Angeles to see his show. They had a customs hold-up, so they had to miss the first performance.
Liam met his family at a hotel after the show instead, where he decided to wake Ruth up. She shared: “You woke me up to say hi and have a quick catch up and as you were leaving said ‘well Ru, you’ve missed David Beckham tonight’ picked up your gfs bags and left the room, leaving 22-year-old me processing the heartbreak of missing David Beckham!”
Ruth said, “You worked your arse off for the band, consistently showing how incredible you are, and 1D time will always have such a fond place in my heart. I have so many fan tributes to show you today, and I know you would be blown away by the love 15 years later, but this year, it’s not how it used to be.
“But as I light my Wednesday candle and speak to you with my heart, I’m hoping you’re all smiles and sitting comfortably with your laptop open while listening to your band’s music from beginning to end. You were my once in a lifetime, Liam, and I love you forever.
At the time of Liam’s death, Ruth spoke out as she devastatingly said: “I’m sorry I couldn’t save you.” She said she was struggling to comprehend the tragic news and all she wanted to do was ‘drive to her brother’s house and speak to him’.
