Rico Lewis was refrained from speaking up in their Fifa Club World Cup opener, according to Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, who criticized the referee’s decision to refer him.

In the 88th minute of City’s 2-0 victory over Moroccan side Wydad Casablanca in Philadelphia, the 20-year-old England international was sent off.

When Lewis slid into a challenge with Samuel Obeng, Lewis slammed into his opponent’s face with his boot as he ran into him.

The video assistant referee (VAR) issued a confirmation of the red card despite the full-back’s protests, and Lewis will now be suspended for Monday’s second game against Al Ain in Atlanta (BST 02:00).

Guardiola said that while he (Lewis) was on the grass and touched the ball, he thought the leg was a little high.

“For the speed they touch the ball,” he said. Rico never intended to hurt anyone, he never does.

The referee had a different perspective, and he is the boss, so to speak, the red card was unnecessary. We accept it because they checked the VAR.
