Former England coach Darren Lehmann claims that the “abuse” they direct against Australia’s Steve Smith “should be better.”
Following his role in the 2018 ball-tampering scandal, Smith, 36, has frequently received chants and boos from England supporters.
In the wake of the incident, Lehmann resigned as coach while Smith was fired as captain and given a year’s worth of punishment.
According to Lehmann, “you get abuse every day.” It is unbelievable, he said.
He plays every day, says Smith. He would suffer more.
They simply don’t forget in England, they say. They appear to have never violated any of their lives.
Smith acknowledged that Australia’s “leadership group” “devised a plan to tamper with the ball” during a Test against South Africa.
Cameron Bancroft was then filmed using sandpaper to rough up the ball by former opener David Warner, who later was caught by TV cameras during play. Smith and both men were banned as well.
Smith regained consciousness after the ball-tampering incident in the 2019 Ashes Test match in Edgbaston, and he has since been repeatedly booed.
His tearful news conference in 2018 also drew the attention of England fans.
Lehmann remarked, “We did the wrong thing, accept it, and move on.”
You make every effort to move forward. Every day, you are reminded, which is normal.
Steve Smith’s handling of everything allows him to keep his head high.
