Sir Alex Ferguson expressed his thoughts on a trip to Elland Road in his best-selling autobiography, “Managing My Life.”
He claimed that “the crowd consistently gives the impression that a lynching would be too bad for us.”
Ferguson made this observation after his typically tense 2011 League Cup victory there.
He continued, “I’ve always said that the Liverpool-Manchester United games are fierce in many ways.”
“But it never reaches Leeds United’s standards.” Never”.
In December, Leeds defeated Chelsea 3-1 at home and held on to earn a point in a 3-3 draw against Liverpool.
However, Manchester United makes another trip.
Lifelong Leeds fan Gary Edwards, “I have a decorating company with the motto that we will not use red paint for 40 years.”
“We will provide free painting of over red. It continues to do so today. It appears on all letterheads and business cards.
It’s difficult to pinpoint the rivalry’s true roots.
Many people believe that it dates back to the 15th century when there was little connection between the Houses of York and Lancaster itself, and the Duchy of Lancaster had offices and land in Yorkshire.
Others believe that the rivalry dates back to the Industrial Revolution, which at least accounts for the development of football as an organized sport, even though neither club, which was originally known as Leeds City and Newton Heath, or their current names, actually rose to prominence after World War II.
Perhaps a factor is the reverence for the Busby Babes in the 1950s and beyond in comparison to the disapproval of Don Revie’s team in the 1960s and 1970s.
One club’s knowledge that key players, including Johnny Giles, Gordon Strachan, Joe Jordan, Gordon McQueen, Denis Irwin, and Eric Cantona, left to contribute to the success of the other’s is another. Additionally, the proximity of the best-supported teams from the two largest cities in two geographically dissimilar counties, both of which are Pennines-based, is important.
Whatever the situation may be, the rivalry is real, and despite the early 12:30 GMT kickoff, Leeds are undoubtedly on the verge of a cauldron as they prepare to take on Manchester United at home in the Premier League for the first time since 2002, when Harry Kewell scored the winner.
When Paul Robinson scored for Leeds that day, he claimed, “It feels completely different.
Two hours before kick-off, “you arrive at the stadium and some areas are blocked off.” You can’t drive there because there are police here. That road is closed as well as this one.
It is “as fierce as any derby you can name in this country,” not to mention being hostile.
I was a ball boy at some games as a child in the Leeds academy. The cheese wedge at the corner of Elland Road and Broadway used to house the away section. Nobody wanted to play ball boy in that corner for the majority of the season. Everyone, however, wanted to be over in that corner when Manchester United arrived, for whatever reason.
“It was just a different experience and game,” he said.
Before, neither manager has attended a Leeds-Manchester United game.
Daniel Farke, manager of Leeds, is aware of the significance of the game for the club’s supporters and wants to help “dreams come true.”
Ruben Amorim, the head coach of Portugal at Manchester United, has spent the last two years coaching rivals Sporting and Benfica as well as at the national team.
He doesn’t think the comparison is particularly helpful.
According to Amorim, “I’ve heard it’s a big rivalry and a big derby.”
“It’s challenging to compare different histories, dialects, and cultures. Any player will have to work hard because the game is being played in a hostile environment. However, you must be prepared for everything when you play for Manchester United.
Leeds won the 1992 title game at the expense of Manchester United, who were in charge of their own destiny until a run of three consecutive defeats at the end of the season allowed Howard Wilkinson’s side to win.
Unfortunately for Leeds, the post-script was reportedly a result of a meeting with Martin Edwards of Manchester United in November when chief executive Bill Fotherby rang the following month to inquire about the possibility of bringing full-back Irwin back.
Irwin was present, but Ferguson refused to leave, but he did inform Edwards about Cantona’s availability. The history of English football was altered by that call.
Gary Edwards remarks, “I’ve never forgiven Bill for that.”
The relative infrequency with which it occurs makes Leeds’ rivalry with Manchester United not come to mind in the same way that other countries in England do.
The two clubs only met eight times between 1982 and 1982, aside from the 14-year spell that started with Leeds’ top-flight promotion in 1990 and its relegation in 2004. Leeds lost five times to League One at Old Trafford in the FA Cup, winning once overall in 2010 as a League One side.
Fans of the two clubs, however, don’t forget.
Manchester United still sang a song about teams they didn’t like and tied “and Leeds” to it, according to Robinson, who spent six years at Leeds before leaving for Tottenham in 2004.
“Week in, week out, no matter what league they play in or against whom they play,” Leeds supporters take great pride in expressing their disapproval of Manchester United.
Leeds improve their record to six games and move seven points clear of relegation in 16th place with a goalless draw draw at Anfield following their home comeback against Arne Slot’s men. Since Marcelo Bielsa took over in April of this year, they have had their best top flight performance.
In contrast, sixth-placed Manchester United has only three victories in a row since the end of October, and on December 30 they were unable to defeat a Wolves side that has only collected three points all season.
Robinson thinks that some Leeds fans would prefer a successful season to finish 17th and defeat Manchester United.
Gary Edwards remarked, “That does exist.” There are fans who believe that, though I’m not exactly like that.
Because we have turned a corner, I just think it’s as good of a time to play them as well.
The same formation and the same players who appeared dreadful at the start of the season are now confident and assured.
