German Olympic biathlete Laura Dahlmeier, who died in a mountaineering accident in Pakistan this week, has been buried in the streets.
On Wednesday, Dahlmeier was declared dead after falling rocks while climbing 5,700 meters (18,700 feet) on Laila Peak in the Karakoram range at a height of 5,700 meters.
Due to “dangerous” conditions at the site, Dahlmeier’s management agency reported on Thursday.
The organization told the Alpine Club of Pakistan that her relatives would “continue to monitor the situation” and that they had the option to make arrangements for a rescue at a later time.
The two-time Olympic gold medalist had stated she didn’t want her body to be recovered if it put any would-be rescuers in danger, according to several of Dahlmeier’s coworkers.
German mountaineer Thomas Huber, who had attempted a rescue, said to reporters on Thursday that “we have decided she should stay because that was her wish.”
American Jackson Marvell, a member of the rescue team, claimed that recovering her body against her wishes would be “disrespectful.”
The recovery of Laura’s body is possible, according to Marvell, but it involves a lot of risks, both on foot and by helicopter.
At a press conference on Thursday, Dahlmeier’s climbing partner Marina Krauss claimed the former Olympian did not move after being caught in a rockfall.
“I witnessed Laura being hit by a massive rock before being thrown against the wall.” She continued to stay put until that very moment, Krauss told the media.
Krauss requested outside assistance after discovering she couldn’t reach Dahlmeier.
She said, “It was impossible for me to travel there safely.”
“It became clear to me that calling a helicopter was the only way to assist her.” She exhibited no signs of movement and did not move. I emailed her, but she didn’t respond.
She only had a chance if immediate assistance was needed.
Dahlmeier became the first woman biathlete to win both the sprint and the pursuit at the same Games after winning seven gold medals at the world championships.
