Prince Harry’s behavior, according to royal sources, caused the late Queen Elizabeth II to be “deeply hurt” before and after her big day with Meghan Markle, straining a once close-knit family bond.
Whilst minimal in comparison to his brother’s wedding, when Prince Harry married Meghan Markle at St George’s Chapel in Windsor back in May 2018, it was certainly a grand royal affair. It was before any public feud played out after quitting their duties with The Firm, with the Royal Family out in full force.
The new Duchess of Sussex appeared to be a fairytale couple. However, it appears that things didn’t go as smoothly as they had anticipated, which reportedly led to the formation of cracks. The late Queen Elizabeth was privately “dismayed” by her grandson’s behavior both before and after the big day, according to royal biographer Ingrid Seward.
Seward alleges the Queen’s close friend and cousin, Lady Elizabeth Anson, said the Queen was left troubled by Harry’s “high-handed attitude” during that period. This apparently is what tilted the scales, reportedly leaving their relationship “badly damaged” moving forward, the Daily Mail reports.

After Meghan was given the opportunity to access the Queen Mary Diamond Bandeau’s tiara at the last minute, the pair had a heated exchange. The Queen intervened herself, according to reports from the time, and Harry did not like Angela Kelly, the Queen’s dresser, with her voice raised.
Meghan’s choice to wear a white dress and veil, a traditional look typically reserved for brides who first get married, reportedly raised eyebrows for the Queen. From 2011 to 2013, Meghan was married to filmmaker Trevor Engelson.
Harry was said to have requested special permission to wear his military beard, which was done in contrast to the Army’s standard policy against wearing facial hair while wearing dress uniform, adding to the tension.
Very hurt
Harry and the Queen have always had a friendly relationship. In 2016, they even captured a humorous Invictus Games promo on camera, demonstrating their playful side. However, according to reports, that closeness vanished after Harry and Meghan’s 2020 break from the royal family.
The Queen “ever truly understood Harry’s decision to leave,” Lady Elizabeth Anson told Katie Nicholl. The Queen has been severely hurt by it all because she has never been able to turn herself back on duty.

Meghan recalled: “Concerns and conversations about how dark his [Archie’s] skin would be when he was born. People were concerned with how dark Archie’s skin would be.” It was during this interview that Harry admitted that despite his love for his brother he was on a very different path to him. He also said both William and King Charles were “trapped” in the institution.

Although it is widely believed that The Queen passed away before Spare would have been incredibly unsettling, she passed away before Spare would have been released in 2023. Particularly the details about family arguments, including a heated exchange between Meghan and Kate over “baby brain” comments, and Harry’s drug use, how he lost his virginity in a field behind a pub.
