LASIEC Boss Contests Low Voter Turnout During Lagos LG Election

The Chairperson of the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC), Retired Justice Bola Okikiolu-Ighile, says people may say the turnout was very low in Saturday’s local government elections but it was because voters didn’t stay more than five minutes at the polling units to complete the process.

She stated this during a press briefing shortly after voting ended on Saturday afternoon at the LASIEC head office on Lancaster Street in the Yaba area of Lagos State.

She said, “In some places, the turnout was very impressive. Some others took their time to come out.

“Someone sent me a message that it didn’t take him more than five minutes at the polling unit. So, we may not even know how many people came out. If we say people turn out very low here but it might not be so over there because they were not kept at the polling unit.”

Giving an assessment of the electoral process so far, she thanked God that rain didn’t disturb the process.

According to her, initially, a lot of polling units outside of the urban areas were inaccessible. However, she said the sensitive and non-sensitive materials later got to their destinations.

She said, “At the end of the day, everything settled. Some parts took some time to start but others, it took a while.

“Some people took their time to come out to vote.”

The LASIEC boss said though there were some security concerns, the police took care of it.
