Lagos Government Launches “Trash For Cash” Drive to Promote Recycling

By converting disposable, recyclable items into cash, the Lagos State government has launched a new initiative.

The initiative is a part of a statewide effort to create a more eco-friendly and cleaner environment.

Tokunbo Wahab, the commissioner for the environment and water resources, said the government has started campaigns to educate residents on how to make money from recyclables. He disclosed the development on his official X handle on Monday.

“Did you know that cash can be turned into trash?” Our @Lawma_gov Recycling Team is “on the ground in Lagos Island, showing communities how to make it happen”! Wahab wrote.

Every Thursday, we give back to the residents of Lagos for keeping things clean and green. Both your wallet and our city will benefit from this! Engage and discover what your waste can be worth.

The government’s wider plan includes improving waste-to-cash programs, reducing environmental pollution, and promoting better waste sorting and recycling practices in all local government areas.

In a related post, LAWMA reiterated the commissioner’s message and highlighted its ongoing efforts to promote responsible waste management.

Residents and shop owners in Agege (Sango Ward) received information on timely bill payments and proper waste management. Each of us having proper disposal, sorting, and no roadside dumping is the first step in keeping Lagos clean, the organization stated via its official X handle.

The waste management authority added that several communities already have field officers and recycling partners on the ground, holding training drives to educate residents about how to separate recyclables from other household waste and ensure timely collection.
