King Charles’ surprise royal residence that has double the visitors of Buckingham Palace

The Royal Collection Trust has released their annual report, with one significant royal quarter welcoming more than twice as many people as the famous Palace could.

While Buckingham Palace has long been synonymous with the royal family, it seems the impressive London quarters is not the favourite royal residence among dedicated royal fans.

Windsor Castle welcomed a record-breaking number of guests in the previous year, as the Royal Collection Trust’s annual review revealed, but Buckingham Palace did not receive as many royal-loving visitors as it did.

According to the yearly review, Windsor Castle saw 1,367,000 visitors in the year 2024-2025, while Buckingham Palace, situated in the centre of London, only saw 683,000 royal fans visit in the same space of time. The impressive numbers come after King Charles axed a major tradition at the Palace .

Windsor Castle, located 25 miles outside of London, is close to where the Prince and Princess of Wales reside with their three children, making it a major attraction for anyone dedicated to the Firm.

Buckingham Palace is closed for a while, but Windsor Castle is open year-round to the public, which didn’t stop a large crowd of royal fans from visiting the stunning Palace in London.

With the opening of the East Wing, which included a special tour, becoming a major attraction, Buckingham Palace attracted a record-breaking number of visitors during its summer of 2024, with almost 6, 000 people visiting the State Room in addition to the State Room.

646 389 people showed up at the Palace’s summer opening this year, which is the highest number since it first opened its doors to the public in 1993, making it the highest number since.

In contrast to the impressive visitor numbers at Windsor Castle and Buckingham Palace, Edinburgh’s Palace of Holyroodhouse attracted 440, 000 visitors annually, while the royal mews attracted 165, 000.

After largely dividing his time between the royal residences before he became King, Charles now spends more time at the Windsor residence. Windsor Castle was also a favourite of the late Queen Elizabeth.

Windsor Castle was also a popular residence for Prince William and Prince Harry during their childhoods, as well as their royal cousins such as Zara Tindall.

According to a member of staff who has worked for both the late Queen and King Charles, the castle is “coming to life again”.
