When a car drove down a street full of revellers, at least 47 people were hurt, four of whom were seriously.
Police said they were not treating the incident as terrorism, but a 53-year-old white British man, who is alleged to be the car’s driver, was detained.
The British monarch thanked the emergency services for their support, saying, “I know that the strength of community spirit for which your city is renowned will be a comfort and support for those in need at this heartbreaking time for the people of Liverpool.”
Prince William, Charles’s older son, Prince William’s heir, and Princess Catherine, his wife, both expressed deep sorrow at the scene in Liverpool, which left four children injured, one of whom was seriously injured.
The prince, who is a staunch supporter of the Football Association and a devoted fan of the sport, said, “Our thoughts are with those who were hurt.”
