Kelly Clarkson shared two kids with her ex Brandon Blackstock, and in a new update, she said she has been snuggling them more in recent months, after their dad passed away

Kelly Clarkson has shared a rare update on her children, five months after their father passed away.

The Stronger singer’s ex, Brandon Blackstock, died following a “brave and courageous” three-year battle with melanoma in August 2025. They shared two children, 11-year-old River and nine-year-old Remington, known as Remy.

Kelly, 43, recently spoke on a Q&A session that was posted to The Kelly Clarkson Show’s official YouTube channel, where she answered questions from fans. One of the questions she was asked was what she does every day that brings her joy. She replied, “Snuggle. My kids, they’re 9 and 11. They’re kind of in that special little fun stage where they can wipe their own behinds, but they’re still small enough to love cuddling and love snuggles.”

She then explained that following a difficult time for them as a family, she is sharing bedtime with her children a lot more. She added: “There’s been a lot for our family recently, and so I have allowed my kids to sleep with me quite a bit.”

Sharing more insight into their bedtime routine, Kelly revealed: “It’s my two dogs, my two kids and me. It’s a lot.” She added: “It’s been really special though, because the conversations you have during that time are pretty cute. So that’s probably my favourite time of day.”

Kelly and Brandon divorced in 2022 after nine years of marriage. Brandon died in August last year after battling melanoma for three years, his family confirmed in a statement. “It is with great sadness that we share the news that Brandon Blackstock has passed away. Brandon bravely battled cancer for more than three years,” they said.

“He passed away peacefully and was surrounded by family. We thank you for your thoughts and prayers and ask everyone to respect the family’s privacy during this very difficult time.”

Talent manager Brandon was the former stepson of country star Reba McEntire. In addition to his children with Kelly he was also dad to Savannah and Seth, from a previous marriage, and was a grandfather, with Savannah welcoming her son, Lake, in 2022.

Kelly returned to her talk show for the Season 7 premiere just over a month after Brandon’s death. She did not address the topic at the time, and said in her opening dialogue: “It’s so great to see all of y’all again. I feel like it’s been a minute.”

During her show, she cried as she spoke to a group of bus drivers who helped rescue children during the deadly flash floods in Texas in July. Kelly could be seen wiping away tears as Kerrville school district superintendent Dr. Brent Ringo discussed the impact the flooding – which killed 135 and left more missing – had on the community.
