The 50-year-old actress has openly discussed her troubled early years, when classmates at school were “bloody horrible” to her, locking her in closets, and mocking her weight.
Kate Winslet, the Oscar-winning actress, has revealed how cruel taunts from classmates and even teachers led to her developing a serious health issue. She claimed that the drama school staff had treated her poorly, which sparked an eating disorder, because she wasn’t as slim as some of the other girls in her acting class.
She explained on BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs: “I really remember vividly a drama teacher who many people have wrongly assumed was a man – it was actually a woman – and she said to me, ‘Well darling, you’ll have a career if you’re happy to settle for the fat girl parts’.”
She continued, “from the age of 15 to the age of 19,” adding that she was “on and off diets.” Kate eventually claimed that she was no longer eating and that she was “really unhealthy.”
