Sophie married Prince Edward, and she later allegedly held the title of Countess of Wessex, which she later assumed.
Since marrying into the Royal Family in 1999, Duchess Sophie has cemented herself as a key player within the Firm, attending official engagements on behalf of King Charles, and sharing a close bond with both Prince William and Princess Kate.
Sophie and Kate are said to enjoy a “naughty friendship” and are often seen sharing a joke or tender moment together at royal events, while Sophie and William share their dedication and loyalty to the Firm. But despite her popularity, eyebrows were raised with the title she was awarded ahead of marrying the late Queen Elizabeth’s youngest son Prince Edward.

According to some, this is because a plan to remove her title from Kate’s current position was abandoned in favor of a more unconventional one. Edward became Earl of Wessex when he wed Sophie in 1999, replacing his older brother Prince Andrew, who had previously been given dukedom. Sophie became the Countess of Wessex as a result of this decision, which took place on Tuesday, at her 61st birthday.
However, it is believed that she did almost end up with a different title – and it was the same one the now Princess of Wales was awarded on her wedding day. According to one palace courtier, Edward was originally going to be offered the title Duke of Cambridge, which was eventually given to Prince William.
Sophie would have become Kate, the title that eventually became known as the Duchess of Cambridge, had this original plan been realized.
However, the courtier explained to The Telegraph in 2010 that Prince Edward was going to be the Duke of Cambridge despite watching Shakespeare in Love, which featured a character called the Earl of Wessex. He requested that the Queen give him instead of the sound of it.
However, in 2023, Edward and Sophie did see their titles change once more when they became the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh. Edward was created Duke of Edinburgh on his 59th birthday back in March 2022 in honour of his late father Prince Philip – meaning Sophie became Duchess of Edinburgh.
Duchess Sophie has traveled hundreds of miles to support charitable causes that are dear to her heart while also being known as the Royal Family’s “secret weapon.” Sophie’s work ethic is frequently described as the “secret weapon” or “the quiet” saviour of the monarchy, which has recently been lacked in active members due to a lack of fault of its own,” according to Hannah Furness, of The Telegraph.
Hannah continued, adding that the Duchess is “ready to do more” and will be a “more prominent” person when Prince William, her nephew, succeeds his father.
