On Monday, Abba Yusuf, the governor of Kano State, met with President Bola Tinubu at the State House in Abuja.
At 4:13 p.m. local time, the governor was seen arriving at the President’s residence.
The Governor emerged after more than three hours of sitting in the President’s office, but he declined to comment when State House reporters inquired about his purpose.
His possible transition from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) is being discussed during his visit.
Following reports of Governor Yusuf’s planned transition from the NNPP to the APC, a move that the party’s leadership and its national leader, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, have recently sparked new tensions in Kano politics.
The NNPP has been mired in internal disagreements, particularly between Kwankwasiya supporters and Kwankwasi supporters, who were led by Kwankwaso.

The NNPP said it was fully aware of the state’s changing political climate and did not support any defection to the APC in a press release released on behalf of the NNPP in Kano State and at the national level in December 2025.
Hon. The NNPP Kano State Chairman, “We are aware of the developments happening here in Kano State regarding some individuals who intend to defect to the APC.” said Hashim Suleiman Dungurawa.
“I want to make it clear that Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, our national leader, and other leaders, do not approve of what is happening,” said the leader of the Kano State party, the national party, and other leaders.
In order to serve the people of Kano State, the party made several efforts to persuade those involved to remain patient and adhere to the NNPP.
Because of our obligations to them and the Kano people, he said, “We did everything in our power to persuade them to be patient and not defect to the APC.”
In a stern warning to party members considering defection, Kwankwaso also addressed the audience in December, stating that political betrayal has never had a lasting impact.
Kwankwaso claimed in a viral video from the meeting with his supporters that the alleged actions had no bearing on him and that history can teach politicians who leave the party lessons.
No one has betrayed us and succeeded, Kwankwaso said, “I want to remind those who left us.” The case is that “political history is very clear.” Those who believe they can rise by defrauding the people and the movement they are a part of should reflect deeply.
The party’s strength lies with the people, not the individual officeholders, as the NNPP leader argued.
He continued, “These developments don’t bother me.” The majority’s support is important, not the movement of a few politicians who are pursuing personal interests,” he said.
Kwankwaso also cited the large turnout of supporters as evidence that Kano State’s NNPP and Kwankwasiya Movement still enjoy strong grassroots support.
He said, “You can see the number of people who came here today with your own eyes.” This provides proof that the Kano people’s movement is strong, alive, and firmly rooted.
