Kalu Urges Tinubu To Recognise Abiola As Former President
Former Abia State Governor, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, has called on President Bola Tinubu to officially recognize the late Chief MKO Abiola as one of Nigeria’s past presidents.
Abiola’s portrait should be displayed in the Presidential Villa along with those of other former leaders, urged the Senator representing Abia North.
Senator Kalu responded to recent revelations made by former military president, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida (rtd.), before the start of plenary on Tuesday. admitting in his recently released memoir, that Abiola won the June 12, 1993, presidential election.
In his words, “Yes, Abiola won the election. And I’ll recommend that Tinubu be proclaimed president posthumously.
He praised former president Muhammadu Buhari’s actions, saying that Abiola had received a posthumous national honor, but that more recognition was required.
“Since Abiola won, his picture should be placed among Nigeria’s past presidents. I applaud former President Buhari for recognizing him as a national hero, but I also urge President Tinubu to recognize him and restore his dignity. His family would gain so much from this.
Senator Kalu pressed the former military leader to release a second volume to address unresolved issues surrounding the annulment of the June 12 election when asked about Ibrahim Babangida’s memoirs, which he claimed were incomplete.
Because the first edition of Babangida’s book did not fully reveal the realities, I look forward to the second edition. I am aware of what transpired when I was present for the June 12 incident. The names of those responsible for preventing the election declaration should be called out by Bandida.
Kalu also dismissed claims that the 1966 coup was an ethnic conspiracy, adding that “the coup in question was not an Igbo coup, it was a Nigerian coup, executed by the military”.
There is no denying that Moshood Abiola won that election, he said once more.
After June 12, Kalu subtly launched a campaign for 2027’s reelection of President Tinubu. When asked about the next presidential election, he responded confidently, ‘ Yes, Asiwaju will win in 2027’.
Senator Kalu, who is known for wearing white traditional attire, appeared in a burgundy-colored outfit today, explaining that the color symbolized continuity, declaring that ‘ “This is continuity, it means Asiwaju, continue”.
He added that history had shown that even presidents who had allegedly served ineffective administrations have won second terms, and he urged Nigerians to hold on to Tinubu’s reform plan.
Senator Kalu urged Nigerians to be patient with the reform process while expressing confidence in Tinubu’s chances. We support the current president and are fully committed to democratic principles. We are not looking for another presidential candidate outside of our party.
