On a major expressway close to Lagos, the 36-year-old boxer was a passenger in a Lexus SUV that collided with a stationary truck.
Sina Ghami and Latif “Latz” Ayodele, his close friends and teammates, both died in the collision. On Sunday, they were buried at a London mosque.
Before making his way back to the UK this weekend, the former two-time heavyweight champion was taken to a hospital and discharged on Wednesday.
He posted two photos on Instagram on Sunday morning, one of which showed him posing alongside his mother and members of the victims’ families, including those of Ghami and Ayodele’s mothers, and another of which showed him holding a photo of Ghami.
The post’s title reads “My Brothers Keeper” ().
Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, 46, was charged Friday at Sagamu Magistrates’ Court. According to sources close to the case, the charges included “causing death by dangerous driving.”
The defendant was remanded pending the fulfillment of his bail requirements and was given a 5m naira (2,578) bail. The case has been postponed until January 20.
Joshua, who was born in Watford, was raised in Sagamu, an Ogun state town close to the crash site.
A family member reported to the BBC that the 2012 Olympic champion was traveling to the town to celebrate the new year with his family.
