After a fatal car crash in Nigeria that claimed the lives of two of his close friends, former world champion boxer Anthony Joshua, has returned to the UK.

On Monday, the 36-year-old was a passenger in a Lexus SUV that collided with a stationary truck on a major expressway in Lagos.

Sina Ghami and Latif “Latz” Ayodele, Joshua’s close friends and teammates, both died in the collision. On Sunday, they will be buried at a London mosque.

Joshua was taken to a hospital and discharged on Wednesday.

Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, 46, was charged Friday at Sagamu Magistrates’ Court. According to sources close to the case, the charges included “causing death by dangerous driving.”

The defendant was remanded pending the fulfillment of his bail requirements and was given a 5m naira (2,578) bail. The case has been postponed until January 20.

Joshua, who was born in Watford, was raised in Sagamu, an Ogun state town close to the crash site.

A family member reported to the BBC that the 2012 Olympic champion was traveling to the town to celebrate the new year with his family.
