Jesy Nelson, who was in Little Mix, has told of her grief at her twins being diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), which can cause muscle weakness and gets worse over time

Singer Jesy Nelson would have been best served had she “never been famous at all,” according to an insider.

The source said Jesy, 34, struggled with the fame into which she and her Little Mix bandmates were thrusted having won The X Factor in 2011. They added: “Looking back now, I wonder if the best thing for her would have been to have avoided those auditions.”

Their reflection comes amid Jesy’s battles following her twins being diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), which can cause muscle weakness. The star, from Romford, east London, has warned other parents of the symptoms of this, which gets worse over time. Her campaign – for every newborn to get a simple £5 blood test on the NHS – has been backed by the Mirror.

But this hasn’t stopped fans share their concern for Jesy, who became emotional on This Morning on Thursday. Sources close to the singer opened up about Jesy’s difficult time in the limelight since 2011, including abuse from online trolls and a suicide attempt. The initial source continued: “She wanted fame, she wanted to be a star… Maybe it would have been best if she had never been famous at all.”

After Little Mix won the ITV show, cruel online commenters told Jesy, then just 20, she was the “ugliest thing” and “deserved to die” because she was curvier than her bandmates. Yet, Jesy defied the haters to help Little Mix Little Mix become surely the most successful act to have won The X Factor (One Direction came third in 2010).

The band had five UK number one singles, including Shout Out to My Ex in 2016 and Sweet Melody in 2020. Jesy and the other girls achieved a total of over 15 billion streams on Spotify, performing in more than 20 countries and selling three million concert tickets.

They split, though, in 2022 and Jesy has faced further challenges since then. Jesy’s daughters Story and Ocean, who were born prematurely in May, have been diagnosed with SMA, which is a genetic disorder which causes progressive muscle weakness. The earlier the condition is detected and treated, the less severe it becomes.
