Former Little Mix star Jesy Nelson and her fiancé Zion Foster have split up after three years together and welcoming two daughters, who were recently diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy

Jesy Nelson was seen breaking down in tears during her first interview following her split from her fiance, Zion Foster. The two have called off their engagement after the births of their twin daughters, who were later diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type 1 (SMA).

Appearing on This Morning, Jesy met with Health Secretary Wes Streeting to discuss her campaign to have SMA as one of the conditions that all newborns are screened for. It is the first time Jesy has been seen since the sad news about her and Zion emerged.

Jesy broke down in tears as she discussed her daughters and the impact she hoped to have on helping other mums avoid a similar diagnosis to her girls. The newly single star added that she wants to be her daughters’ mother rather than their ‘nurse’ as she navigates the challenges ahead.

Talking to both the camera and Wes, Jesy said she could see the impact their off screen discussion had on Wes. “I know it really impacted you because it’s when you see it in real life and you see the severity of it, and it’s literally a case of your child could walk or your child could be in a wheelchair.”

Struggling to hold back the tears, she finished: “I feel so passionately about this, because no parent should have to go through that.” Jesy later said she hopes Wes “puts his money where his mouth is” and speeds up SMA screenings.

The singer has been campaigning for SMA1 screenings to take place from birth and get the condition added to the newborn blood spot screening test, also known as the heel prick test, after learning that her twins will likely never be able to walk.

The singer was careful to hide her hands during the chat after fans had spotted she wasn’t wearing her engagement ring during her first appearance on This Morning earlier this month.

Despite her heartache, Jesy is said to be committed to co-parenting with Zion and the pair have both shared their hopes of giving their daughters the best quality of life they can.

News of the split came just months after they happily shared their engagement with fans. The two had an on and off again relationship, breaking up for the first time in 2022 but getting back together.

During their first split, a source told the Mirror it was down to their schedules and the eight-year age gap between them. The insider said at the time: “Jesy is in a different head space from Zion these days. She is after all a few years older than Zion and has a different way of looking at things these days. They had a great trip abroad but since they got back, Jesy has realised it’s time to move on.”

They got back together and broke up a few more times over the years, until January 2025, when they announced they were expecting twins. Jesy announced the news via Instagram, where she shared a picture of her baby bump, with the caption: “She’s eating for three now.”

The twins were born in May and a few months later, in September, Jesy and Zion announced their engagement. They continued to show their affection for each other on social media. As such, fans were shocked by reports of their split.

However, there were signs. In an appearance on This Morning to talk about her daughters’ devastating SMA diagnosis, Jesy was not wearing her engagement ring.

This came only weeks after the star opened up to the world about her daughters’ health battle. The twins, Ocean Jade and Story Monroe, have a genetic condition which kills muscles in the body over time. Jesy shared the news over Instagram.

In a video, she tearfully said: “I am grieving a life I thought I was going to have with my children.” She added that her life has been turned upside down and she is now acting as a nurse to her girls by “putting them on breathing machines and doing stuff that no mother should have to do with their child.”
