Emotional Jessie J and Princess Kate were seen hugging on a red carpet after both previously being diagnosed with cancer – but there could be a joint project soon
Jessie J has revealed she will be working with Catherine, Princess of Wales, on a new project after the pair were seen bonding over their cancer experiences and grief in life.
The singer, 37, wore a black tracksuit to The Royal Variety Performance on Wednesday night and explained the baggy black hoody was a tribute to her close friend and security guard Dave Last who took his own life seven years ago. Her song I’ll Never Know Why is also about him.
Asked about meeting and hugging Princess Catherine on the red carpet, Jessie J she said: “It was lovely, honestly. I think the whole feeling for me was obviously so personal. I felt that I was Jessica. I wasn’t Jessie J.”
She added: “I was just purely there to, like, represent the people that feel lost and lonely and scared and that’s why I wore the sweatsuit to represent the people that are on the sofa feeling scared and alone and depressed and and it’s so beautiful what they’re doing.
“Kate and women just how they’re actually speaking up for people that feel suicidal and alone. And obviously, mum to mum, with breast cancer in the public eye, I wanted to acknowledge that.
“It wasn’t a moment that I even thought that people would even see, I was with her in that moment. It was lovely to have a second to just, honestly, give another mama a hug, see you.”
Jessie was out again 24 hours later and speaking at the ZYN Rolling Stone UK Awards, which took place at London’s Roundhouse on Thursday night. Asked if she would like to work on something with Princess Kate, Jessie nodded and then said discussions were already underway.
She added: “100 per cent. We spoke about it last night. I think that the most important thing is to just keep talking about suicide and making sure that it’s not something that people forget.
“The one thing I said yesterday, I said it today and it’s really struck with me is ‘I don’t want people to feel alone alone’. You know? They don’t have to.”
The previous evening the Princess of Wales had shared a touching moment with Jessie J as she and Prince William attended the Royal Variety Performance. The Price Tag singer who performed her new song, I’ll Never Know Why at the event, said she was prompted to give the royal a hug because of their shared experience of cancer.
Kate, 43, underwent six months of preventative chemotherapy last year and revealed in January that she is in remission from an undisclosed form of the disease.
Jessie, whose real name is Jessica Cornish, has faced her own cancer surgery with a mastectomy for breast cancer in June She later revealed she was due to undergo a second operation and had to postpone her autumn tour.
