Jenny Collins, who served as Senior Producer for many years before joining BBC Radio Merseyside in 1967, passed away. Roger Lyon, the founding member, paid tribute.
A colleague paid a fitting tribute to a beloved BBC radio host who passed away. Jenny Collins spent many years of her service at BBC Radio Merseyside, one of the original team that created it in 1967.
The station, which started broadcasting on November 22, 1967 from Commerce House in Liverpool, was the third of the BBC Local Radio network to go live.
BBC Radio Merseyside broadcaster Roger Lyon shared on Facebook: “Very sad to hear today of the passing of one of the founding members of Radio Merseyside, the lovely Jenny Collins.
She began working there in 1967, and she soon took over both the microphone and behind it. She was acting Programme Controller and planning what shows I could do on RM when I moved back to Oz in the middle of the 1990s, and I still have letters from our exchange.
“I last saw her about four years ago when we were on RM talking about her career working there. She wed Steve Voce, who had a Jazz Panorama program for many years. She was a genuine, lovely person with a fantastic broadcasting voice. RIP. “
One fan wrote, “Oh, I remember listening to Jenny, and one of the first presenters I heard when RM opened, she had a “radio voice.”
The lady’s voice is unmatched, according to a third listener, and she is a key component of the song. I’m so sorry to hear this news. “One person shared: “Wow Roger. Remember that Jenny took me on a Presenter course for a week in London in the early 1990s? Always believed it to be the start of my 30-year career with BBC Merseyside. RIP Jenny
A Radio Merseyside fan also expressed condolences on a fan’s page, writing, “Sad news as I note the death of an original Radio Merseyside stalwart.
Another continued, “She did a poetry program, and you couldn’t say no if she needed a story or poem recording and spotted you. She had a persuasive manner.” lovely woman RIP Jenny
What very sad news indeed, a second heartbroken listener said. I can recall hearing about her from Radio Merseyside’s beginnings, and I think she ran a program that was geared specifically at younger listeners.
Jenny Collins was a member of the 1967 station’s founding team, where she served as Senior Producer for many years, and gave programs like Junior Spin. She was wed to the late Steve Voce, the station’s former jazz show host.
Steve Voce, Jenny’s husband, was a well-known jazz journalist and broadcaster, passed away in 2023.
