Jay Leno, the host of the talk show, opened up about his wife Mavis’ dementia diagnosis and the “challenges” of taking care of her.
Talk show host Jay Leno discussed the challenges of taking care of his wife, Mavis, after she was diagnosed with dementia. Jay , who was recently granted conservatorship of her estate and financial assets, appeared on a recent episode of the In Depth with Graham Bensinger podcast.
He said, “When you get married, you kind of vow: “Will I live up to this?” Or will I act like a sleazy person [where] if my wife gets hurt and I’m kicking the cashier at the mini-mart? The 74-year-old said he hasn’t changed since 45 years and is only currently forced to “feed her and do all those things.”

He said it was “challenging” to look after her, before adding, “I like it. She deserves my care. I like that I’m needed because she’s a very independent woman.
In the podcast, Jay also stated that I will be asked to stand up for myself at some point in my life. That’s what, in my opinion, defines marriage really. That’s exactly what love is, I mean. You do that, exactly.
I mean, I’m glad I didn’t run and cut. I’m glad I avoided a woman my age or any other ridiculous nonsense. I’d rather spend time with her than with someone else.
He revealed that moving through memories together is a significant part of the couple’s routine. He gave an example, saying, “It’s kind of fun. Honey, that’s President Obama, I go. Have you forgotten what we had for dinner? ‘]She’ll say], ‘ Oh, not me. ‘]And I’ll say], ‘ Yeah, honey, that was you! ‘ “
The former night show host filed for conservatorship over his wife’s estate in January 2024 after she was given dementia.
According to the petition filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court and obtained by Entertainment Tonight, “Mavis” has been gradually losing space and time aversion over the past few years.
Her “asympathetic state renders her incapable of carrying out the estate plan.”
By creating a trust for their joint inheritance, Jay wants to make sure Mavis has managed her assets sufficiently to provide for her care in the event that he passes away before Mavis. Jay has “always managed the couple’s finances throughout” their marriage.
Jay had also experienced two other accidents, one of which had left his face and neck severely burned, and the other was a motorcycle accident.
Despite the agonizing events, Mavis had maintained a positive attitude toward his love of cars and bikes.
