ITV’s Saturday Morning presenter and famous chef James Martin has shared his ultimate fish and chips recommendation, and the perfect order which tastes like ‘heaven’

James Martin, who was born in Malton, has declared that one Yorkshire eatery delivers fish and chip “nirvana” to diners.

The celebrated chef was speaking on LNER’s Routes podcast, hosted by Jenni Falconer, when quizzed about his top Yorkshire destinations.

He championed the Magpie Café in Whitby, with the ITV star even suggesting punters should specifically request a large haddock accompanied by mushy peas, salt, vinegar and tartar sauce.

Growing enthusiastic, James voiced his adoration for the establishment’s offering and his memories of devouring it beside the sea.

James said: “Go to Whitby, you have to have fish and chips, I think at the Magpie. You’ve got to have a large haddock. A large haddock, mushy peas, you have your lemon, your tartar sauce, you have your Sarson’s vinegar and you have your salt.

He added: “You sit there and the wind’s howling a gale, you sit there and you open up this pot of gold, and then there’s just smell as this steam comes up, it hits your nose.

“The wind howling, but as this steam hits your nose, a little drip of snot drips onto your fish and then you’re in nirvana, heaven, you’re in the pinnacle of fish and chips.”

The Magpie Café James mentions is located on Whitby’s seafront and boasts more than four and a half stars from five across nearly 9,000 Google reviews.

This marks another occasion where James has spoken fondly of Yorkshire, with the Saturday Morning presenter previously telling Food and Travel Magazine about his affection for both Whitby and York.

He reminisced: “York was a once-a-week treat; it would be the nearest supermarket but it’s a special place, all the history there, the Shambles. I went there often but I don’t think I appreciated just how amazing it was.

“When I was a young kid, there was nowhere you really wanted to work from a food point of view, maybe a few hotels, but now there’s b****y hundreds of them.

“I love the North Yorkshire moors, the road from Pickering to Whitby – there’s a steam engine that runs along it too. When you get to Whitby you’ve got the best fish and chips and a walk around the arcades.”

James, who currently splits his time between Manchester, Hampshire, and the Cotswolds, has hinted that he might one day return to reside in Yorkshire.

In the same chat, he added: “I know where I’m going on which day, every week, and the travelling isn’t too bad. I’ll get lynched if I don’t end up in Yorkshire. I really do love Yorkshire.”
