Alex de Minaur received another heartbreaking Grand Slam quarter-final defeat with Felix Auger-Aliassime’s spirited victory to reach the US Open’s final four.
The Canadian came from a set down to win 4-6 7-6 (9-7) 7-5 7-6 (7-4) and reach the semi-finals at a major for the first time since 2021.
De Minaur, from Australia, has reached six Grand Slam quarter-finals, including three in New York, but has not yet advanced past that stage.
With a total of 22 double faults and 93 unforced errors, the back-and-forth match occasionally struggled on both sides of the net.
“I believe it was just a lot of nerves today throughout the entire game,” said Auger-Aliassime.
“Some days you won’t feel your best, but I was willing to go really deep to stand here right now,” said the player. “It wasn’t pretty at all.”
The biggest challenges are still ahead, but that’s what I’m passionate about, so I’ll show up and be ready for my Friday match.
De Minaur quickly found his rhythm in front of a sparse crowd as the game progressed.
As the seats on Arthur Ashe Stadium began to fill up, the action sounded a constant murmur of chatter that served as the soundtrack.
De Minaur had just enough time to seal the opening set when Auger-Aliassime dropped the serve to lead 3-2, but he came back in the next match and saved a third break point.
De Minaur started to struggle after taking the second set on a tie-break, Auger-Aliassime surged to a lead of 3-2 in the third set.
De Minaur, a tenacious defensive player, was unable to break through, but Auger-Aliassime regained control in the following game before deciding to end the set.
Before the fourth, De Minaur gathered himself before the fourth and then re-energized.
He was on course to score a decisive goal with a quick break, but he lost his way at 5-2 and made it impossible for Auger-Aliassime to force a tie-break.
