Israel calling up tens of thousands of reservists to expand war on Gaza

To intensify Israel’s occupation of the Gaza Strip, the military will recruit tens of thousands of reserve members.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made the announcement on Sunday, despite growing calls from inside Israel for a deal that would release Israeli prisoners imprisoned in Gaza and put an end to the conflict that has claimed the lives of more than 50, 000 Palestinians.

We are sending our reserve personnel tens of thousands of draft orders this week to intensify and expand our presence in Gaza. We are putting more pressure on Hamas to release its [held captives in Gaza] and release its leaders, Zamir said, adding that the Israeli military would “operate in additional areas and completely destroy [Hamas’s] infrastructure both above and below ground.”

During a visit to the Atlit naval base, the military chief made the announcement.

The announcement came ahead of a security cabinet meeting that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will lead to discuss a growing Gaza war that has decimated the Palestinian enclave. The meeting will be held in preparation for the meeting.

As humanitarian organizations warn of increased starvation in the territory since Israel imposed a blockade in March, two government officials told Reuters that the cabinet would also discuss the possibility of a new aid shipment to Gaza.
