IOC to tell members not to host events in Indonesia

Following the country’s ban on Israeli athletes, international sports federations will be told to ban events in Indonesia.

Due to the country’s military offensive in Gaza, Indonesia announced that it would not grant visas to the Israeli gymnastics team for the upcoming World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Jakarta.

The Israeli Gymnastics Federation (IGF) criticized the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) failed to come to a decision that would have caused a “dangerous precedent.”

The IOC executive board met this week and has now decided to “end any form of dialogue” with Indonesia’s National Olympic Committee regarding holding upcoming Olympic Games, Youth Olympic Games, or other olympic events or conferences.

Additionally, the IOC “recommends to all international federations not to host any international sports events or meetings in Indonesia.”

The IGF claims that Indonesia, the most populous Muslim country in the world, has been given assurances that its delegation would be welcomed at the championships despite the fact that it has no formal diplomatic relations with Israel.

Artem Dolgopyat, the current world floor champion, is one of the athletes who is unable to compete.

The 28-year-old won silver medal at the Paris 2012 Olympics last year and silver at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics last year. Additionally, he has won two European titles.

The IGF requested urgent provisional measures to guarantee Israeli participation in the event or to move or halt it, but the request was rejected.

The IOC said it had also requested the FIG and the Olympic Committee to attend the IOC’s Lausanne headquarters to discuss the incident that occurred following its meeting this week.
