With her late husband Carl Dean, Dolly Parton and her family had a very private life.

The Jolene singer announced over the weekend that Carl passed away at the age of 82. She wrote: “Carl Dean, husband of Dolly Parton, passed away March 3rd, 1982, in Nashville, in a post on social media.” He will be interred in a private ceremony with immediate family present. His siblings, Sandra and Donnie, also left him.

She then continued, “Carl and I spent many wonderful years together,” in her own words. Words cannot adequately express the love we have shared for more than 60 years. I appreciate your compassion and prayers. In this challenging time, the family has requested privacy.

Carl and Dolly were very private, and despite her international standing, he was rarely seen in public. On her first day in Nashville, the two actually met when she was a teenager. Their romance story began outside of the Wishy Washy Laundromat.

When Dolly Parton was just 20 years old, Carl Thomas Dean and her husband were married.

Following his passing, Dolly paid a heartbreaking tribute to her 60-year marriage.

She recalled their first meeting, “I was in such a hurry to get here,” and she recalled that I had come to Nashville in dirty clothes. And this guy hollered at me as I started walking down the street, just looking at my new home, and I waved after I put my clothes in the machine. I spoke to everyone because I was from the country. And he arrived, and it was my husband, Carl.

The couple tied the knot just two years later in 1966, and Dolly’s mother Avie Lee was present in addition to the preacher and his wife in a straightforward yet intimate ceremony. Carl recalled that in a very uncommon interview from 2016, “I first thought I was going to marry that girl.” Lord she looks good, I seconded that. My life began on that day.

Dolly had always admired Carl’s preference for a life away from the spotlight.

He expresses his disapproval of being in the spotlight. Simply put, it’s not who he is. He’s a quiet, reserved person, and he knew if he ever ventured into that, he wouldn’t ever find peace, she said in 2020.

“I’ve always tried to keep him out of the spotlight as much as I can,” I said. “I’ve always respected and appreciated that in him. He said, “You chose this world, not me, but I did not choose this world.” However, we can live separately and unitely. We do, too.

Fans will be aware that Carl was the composer of Jolene, one of Dolly’s biggest songs. Dolly recalls that the woman she referred to had a terrible crush on my husband. And because she gave him so much attention, he simply adored going to the bank. It kind of reminded us of a running joke, when I said, “Hell, you’re spending a lot of time at the bank.” I don’t think we have that much money. Therefore, the overall sound of the song is actually innocent but a terrible one.
