Max Whitlock, a three-time Olympian who won three gold medals, is retiring in order to compete in the Los Angeles Games in 2028.
The 32-year-old gymnast, who is the most successful British gymnast in history, had initially stated that he would be retiring from the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Whitlock claims that after missing out on a podium spot in the French capital, his career felt “unfinished.”
On The One Show, he declared, “I’m back. It seems unbelievable. I’m back, and that feels incredible considering that I’m also a gymnast once more.
Something was sneezing at me constantly for the past year; it doesn’t sit right; it feels incomplete and unfinished.
“I feel like I have a chance right now, and I’ll never get it again,” he said. I’m returning to the Olympic Games after a three-year break, so I can.
I want to finish it high, I want to rewrite the history of my career, even though it’s a dangerous game.
I think that’s something I regret if I took the chance to take that opportunity rather than not to take the chance because, after ten and fifteen years, I believe I’ll look back and think about it.
Whitlock, who will turn 35 when the LA Games begin, won three bronze medals and a victory on the floor in Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020, respectively.
Despite the fact that the Commonwealth Games, the British Championships, and the English Championships are all scheduled for next year, he now faces a challenge to get back in top shape and compete against gymnasts who are significantly younger.
He said, “I had a year out completely, but I’ve slowly come back in.”
I injured myself the other week. My neck was gone as I was sitting next to the pommel horse, taking my phone and looking up, and I was not even doing anything.
