I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! sees stars face some gruelling challenges – but one contestant might be accustomed to the odd strange dare following a supermarket stunt in 2012…
This year’s I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! is hours away from launching – with this year’s selection of celebrities already in the jungle following their first few days in camp.
As fans of the ITV series prepare to settle into their sofas many will be excited to learn about the stars on this year’s show. Many fans will know actress Shona McGarty from her role as Whitney Dean in EastEnders. It’s been over a year since she left the soap and since then the star has been rising in popularity on social media and has even been launching her own music career.
However, what some fans might not know about the star is she was once banned from an Asda supermarket after taking part in a bizarre dare. In 2012, the star was ordered to leave Asda in Watford, with her and her then-boyfriend Matt Lapinskas, after they were spotted throwing food around.
It was also claimed the Whitney Dean actress had been “suggestively smearing” herself with yoghurt and they were escorted from the store by security and told not to return unless their behaviour improved.
A witness told The Sun at the time: “It was disgusting. The man was opening up pots and looked as if he was throwing it around. Then the girl started to smear it over herself in a suggestive manner.
“I had my kids aged ten and nine with me and they certainly don’t need to see that in the shopping aisles of Asda.”
While a spokeswoman for Asda said at the time: “This isn’t us being Albert squares. As with any customer found to be causing a ruckus in our stores, we politely asked the culprits to leave so they didn’t offend other shoppers.”
Since the supermarket incident Shona and Hollyoaks star Matt split. Meanwhile, more recently the actress suffered heartache following her split from her guitarist fiancé David Bracken, following their engagement in July 2024.
Shona hasn’t confirmed her split from David publicly, but she is noticeably without an engagement ring in recent snaps of the star, including photos of her announcing she’s heading into the jungle. Her jungle appearance was confirmed in a candid video compilation of her build-up to heading into the jungle on her Instagram page.
The caption, written by a close on now managing her social media, read: “Anxiety and depression told her ‘no’ before… This time, she said YES. We wanted to share this beautiful moment saying our goodbyes to Shona before she heads into the jungle.
“Shona has always been open about her struggles with anxiety and depression, battles that once held her back. But this time, she’s won by saying yes to one of the biggest challenges of her life. Yes to the jungle. Yes to herself. “This is a journey for Shona to truly discover who she is and she’s living proof that you can rise above fear and take back your power.
“To anyone fighting their own mental health battles, Shona is your reminder that you can do it too. One brave step at a time.”
