Former EastEnders actor Martin Kemp has entered the I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! jungle six years after son Roman Kemp came third on the hit ITV show
I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here’s Martin Kemp told son Roman to “leave it” when they discussed the hit TV show. Former EastEnders actor Martin was among the latest bunch of famous faces to arrive in the camp last night.
The One Show host Roman, 32, came third when he appeared on the hit ITV show in 2019. Spandau Ballet bassist Martin says his son was the “first person” he spoke to when offered a part on I’m a Celeb.
But he feared his son would take credit if his advice led to him being crowned King of the Jungle. Martin however says Roman was “jealous” that he was going on the show.
Speaking to the Mail on Sunday, 64-year-old Martin, said: “Roman was the first person I asked for advice about whether I should take the job, and he told me to go for it and said he was jealous of me going in.
“But then he kept trying to give me advice, and I had to tell him to stop. I was like, “Just leave it, Roman,” because if I do well, I know he’ll just claim the win. If I do win, Roman won’t live it down.”
Roman finished behind Coronation Street star Andy Whyment and EastEnders actress Jacqueline Jossa in 2019. Martin believes his “life experience” will help him in the show.
He also says he wants to be himself, because “the last thing I want to do is go in there and be false, I’ve never done that and I don’t want to start now”.
Roman previously revealed his dad told the family he was entering the show by sharing a picture of him in the I’m A Celeb outfit on WhatsApp. Martin however insisted he was “sworn to secrecy” by producers.
Speaking to Roman on the You About? podcast ahead of the show, Martin said: “I’m really excited about it. I love doing iconic television, stuff that I’ve been watching for yours, and my favourite memory of the show is you being in it in 2019.”
He added: “When I went to a fitting the other day and I was trying on jungle clothes, I almost felt like I was putting on your clothes. I thought, ‘I bet Roman had these on,’ but it’s really exciting.”
Martin asked his son how he breaks the boredom in the show. To which Roman replied celebrities rely on speaking to each other to break up the day and doing trials.
Roman added: “The boredom’s hard and you want trials. I don’t understand people who go in there and they don’t want a trial, you want trials.”
Roman however says the pressure of dealing with a Bushtucker Trial is “hard”. He also warned his dad about the infamous I’m A Celeb meals, including crocodile feet and eels.
