Idris Elba has gained notoriety over the years for his excellent acting career, which included his role as DCI John Luther in the BBC crime series.
Idris Elba has now broken his silence as he’s been made a knight in the New Year’s honours list. The 53-year-old actor, who is best known for his role as DCI John Luther in the BBC crime series, has been honoured for his services to young people.
Sir Idris has spearheaded the fight against youth violence by starting the Don’t Stop Your Future (DSYF) initiative, which collaborates with local grassroots organizations to stop knife crime.
Along with his wife Sabrina Dhowre Elba, he also founded the international grant-making organization Elba Hope Foundation, which aims to fund initiatives aimed at “empowerment through education, economic opportunity, and entrepreneurship”.

Idris said: “I receive this honor on behalf of the many young people whose talent, ambition, and resilience have fueled the Elba Hope Foundation’s work.”
I hope we can do more to raise awareness of the value of ongoing, practical support for young people and the responsibility we all share in helping them find a solution to violence.
In 2024, the actor called for an immediate ban on machetes and so-called zombie knives and met Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer to launch a new anti-knife crime coalition.
In addition, he spoke with Sir Keir and the King during the BBC documentary Idris Elba: Our Knife Crime Crisis. He was introduced to young offenders, grieving families, youth workers, police, and youth workers during the hour-long program to explain why knife crime is on the rise.
In some parts of the UK, a more comprehensive ban on the sale of zombie-style knives was put into effect in August 2016, before a more comprehensive ban was put in place in September 2024.
In order to assist young people who want to pursue creative careers, Sir Idris’s foundation and The Prince’s Trust teamed up in 2024.
Free courses are offered through the brand-new initiative Creative Futures to help people gain the abilities needed to find employment, train, or launch a business in the creative industries.
Idris has worked closely with The Prince’s Trust throughout his career and was also a teenager supported by the foundation.
The Prince’s Trust’s range of free courses help young people who are not employed, educated, or trained to become experts in the fields of music, theater, and other creative industries.
In addition to playing the lead in Luther, Sir Idris has also acted in other well-known roles, including those in Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom (2014), Knuckles The Echidna, and Sonic The Hedgehog: A Video Game.
In addition to playing Heimdall in six movies, starting with Thor (2011), and Bloodsport in The Suicide Squad (2021), Sir Idris has also appeared in the DC Extended Universe.
He also makes his directorial debut with Yardie (2018), and he also sings R&, B, and DJ under the name DJ Big Driis or Idris.
