Ruben Neves, Diogo Jota’s long-lost teammate, has been given the number 21 shirt he once wore for Portugal.
Jota, the 28-year-old Liverpool forward, was killed in a car accident in northern Spain in July along with his 25-year-old brother Andre Silva.
One of the pallbearers at his funeral was Al-Hilal midfielder Neves, 28, who also played for their country and Jota at Wolves.
Roberto Martinez, Portugal’s manager, stated that Ruben Neves will receive the number 21 jersey because it will keep that number on the field and with everyone else.
He is the ideal representative for Diogo because of their close relationship.
We are aware of Diogo’s significance for each of us and the way in which we live. Every day, we want to remember him in reverence. He will support us in our efforts to further our goals. We can benefit from Diogo’s example. We will feel his spirit.
Because Diogo wanted to win the World Cup, and we are here to fight and realize that dream, Diogo’s absence is a factor of unity, motivation, and responsibility.
After consulting with his wife Rute Cardoso and other members of the Liverpool team, the club decided to retire the number 20 shirt, which the club had worn for the 20th time last year.
