The International Cricket Council turned down Bangladesh’s request to move their T20 World Cup matches from India to the following month.
In light of rising tensions between the two countries, Bangladesh requested that their games be switched to India, and instead demanded that they be played in Sri Lanka, which is co-hosting the tournament.
Bangladesh had been instructed to accept the invitation to play in India by Wednesday, according to reports in Indian media, or they could lose.
The governing body of the ICC said in a statement on Wednesday that it was “unpractical to make changes so close to the tournament” and that changing the schedule in the absence of any real security threat could “set a precedent” that would threaten the sanctity of upcoming ICC events.
On February 7, the T20 World Cup will begin.
Bangladesh will play all four of their group-stage matches in India, including their opening contest with West Indies on February 14 and their first encounter with England in Kolkata on February 14.
Due to the tensions between India and Pakistan, all of their matches will be played in Sri Lanka.
