The Mirror went behind the scenes at the star-studded National Television Awards afterparty to find out all of the showbiz gossip from the biggest night in telly
The National Television Awards returned on Wednesday night with a rainy red carpet reception at London’s 02, and Mirror went behind the scenes at the star-studded bash to find out all of the showbiz gossip.
A glamorous Davina McCall was one of the first to arrive, and her partner of six years Michael Douglas dropped a bombshell when he told us the couple could be set to walk down the aisle, in a surprising U-turn statement. “There could be wedding bells on the way, who knows, I’m not going anywhere else if that’s why you mean,” said the hairdresser when asked if they would tie the knot.
“But we’re in no rush for any of that, we just enjoy each other’s company.” While Michael might be hoping to get down on one knee, Davina remained coy on the subject when she told us last month that getting married was “not important anymore”, admitting: “We’re in the honeymoon period even after all these years, exactly. I am really, really…I couldn’t be more happy. And sometimes there’s an idea of, why change anything?”
As hairdresser to the stars Michael was divulging on his relationship ahead of the awards ceremony, his other half was gallivanting down the other end of the red carpet. Tripping over her heel on the way, Davina let slip an expletive, before referencing her iconic Big Brother opener as she joked, “Oops, I’m always the one who says, ‘Do not swear’.

Someone who isn’t looking to walk down the aisle anytime soon is Helen Flanagan, who told us she’d be happy with a first date. “I’m open to dating, but I’m so busy with the kids. When you’re 19 you can go out in Manchester and come home with a boyfriend a few days later, but I’m 35 now, I’m not really going to go on a night out, am I, really?” said the former Coronation Street actress.
“It’s harder as you get older, and when you’re a mum you’re so busy – I’m just busy with my kids and work all of the time. But I am open to it” Continuing that another stint on Channel 4 show Celebs Go Dating – which she starred on last year – could be on the cards, Helen said, “I would definitely do celebs go dating again, I think I was quite iconic on it, so why not?”
Inside the awards ceremony, which saw surprise wins from the likes of Molly-Mae Hague and Gary Lineker, Maura Higgins had an awkward reunion with her I’m A Celeb co-star Danny Jones as they accepted the Reality Competition gong for the ITV show. The pair kept as far apart as possible on stage, and both appear to have implemented a ‘no afterparties’ rule as they both failed to continue the celebrations after the show, six months on from their BRITs afterparty kiss.
Maura might have been glad to steer clear, as her ex Pete Wicks was out in full force at the exclusive afterparty alongside his best pal Sam Thompson. The pair mingled with fellow TV stars while enjoying some civilised Heinekens, but firmly placed themselves away from any drama and stuck beside one another.
Although, Sam was shooting glances over to his former flame Samie Elishi during the bash, and we hear they caught up in the smoking area before slipping out together. That was as eventful as the unusually tame afterparty got, with many celebrities favouring an early night while soap favourites such as Bobby Brazier let their hair down while snacking on fish and chips during the party.
