‘I know what’s needed’ – Bompastor after Chelsea’s embarrassing exit

Another Women’s Champions League flop, yet another season.

Chelsea may be on the verge of a domestic treble, but they seem to be farther along than ever before winning in Europe.

Barcelona’s most recent attempt to reach the Champions League ended in an embarrassing 8-2 aggregate defeat after a 4-1 setback in a week-long period.

Sonia Bompastor, who won the Champions League title with Lyon in 2022 under former Chelsea manager Emma Hayes, was hired specifically to win the one trophy that had previously been reserved for her.

The Frenchwoman said in a speech from September that she would bear the brunt of the blame if that goal is not met. That’s fine with me.

After Barca had destroyed her team on Sunday, Bompastor continued to work with what must occur for Chelsea to advance.

She said, “We need to reflect on how we make it possible,” even though it didn’t happen this year.

The only positive is that I think it’s very clear what we need to do to compete for the Champions League.

The “gulf is absolutely huge”

Chelsea have reached the semi-finals three times in a row.

They were easily defeated this time, 2-1 on aggregate, compared to their previous two losses.

Before half-time, they were 3-0 up overall and 7-1 overall.

Former England midfielder Karen Carney told TNT Sports, “You have seen the two teams are absolutely huge.”

Fans were unsure of how Barcelona would go about the second leg after establishing a strong first-leg advantage.

Barca were immediately at the forefront at Stamford Bridge.

Carney added that “This team is ridiculously good, but Chelsea’s defending has been shocking.”

Bompastor doesn’t think the gap between her team and Barcelona is accurately expressed in the scoreline.

Barcelona have a really good team, but not much of a difference, she continued.

Does the Euro exit cause a season to fail?

Does Bompastor’s first season become a failure as a result of another Champions League exit?

In her post-game press conference, Bompastor stated that Chelsea’s success will still be assured if they win the FA Cup and the Women’s Super League.

Chelsea will need four points from three games to win the WSL title when they face Manchester United in the FA Cup final at Wembley on May 18 after winning the league title.

If we win those games, “it will have been a good season.” Not ideal or ideal, “bompastor added.

Karen Bardsley, a former England goalkeeper, said it was important to remember the accomplishments of the French coach.

This is Bompastor’s first season working for a new club and trying to fit her identity and philosophy into a new team, she told BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra.

She has players that Emma Hayes gave her, she says.

You can’t, in my opinion, discount what she accomplished in such a short amount of time. Chelsea has a high standard that it adheres to.

The trophy cabinet’s empty shelves are all aching to be filled, just this one.

What does Chelsea want next?

Bompastor claimed that she is aware of what Chelsea needs to achieve in order to succeed and win the Champions League.

When asked about this on Sunday, she said that Wednesday’s WSL game, in which the Blues could win the title, was not the best time to go into great detail.

The team was “disheartened,” according to Captain Millie Bright, but they could still take lessons from it. The defeat was “heartbreaking.”

She responded to BBC Sport with “I think we’re there.” You can see from the quality of the spells in both games, but we still have a lot to learn.

It’s just the technical side, making sure we punish those who rise to power in a position like that. Lessons learned: “You can’t make big mistakes against teams like that,” you may say.

Bright added that a team’s recovery from Sunday’s crushing disappointment was crucial.

There is still a lot to celebrate, and our season has been fantastic so far, but it means nothing unless you have anything to prove it.

Carney continued, “I’m trying to figure out where Chelsea will go in the future.” Do you continue to buy and chase players, or are you doing it for mental or tactical reasons?
