After two marshals ran across the track in front of him, Formula 1 driver Liam Lawson claimed he was only able to survive a fatal collision at Sunday’s Mexico City Grand Prix.
When Lawson rejoined the race after an early pit stop to replace a front wing, the incident occurred on the third lap when marshals were spotted on the circuit.
Racing Bulls driver Lawson responded to his race engineer with the following question on team radio: “Are you kidding me? ” Have you just witnessed that? They could have been killed, I suppose.
He continued, “I honestly couldn’t believe what I was seeing after the race.”
There were only two dudes running across the track when I came out on a new set of hards [tyres] and then Turn One.
“I almost struck one of them,” I must admit.
“Of course there has been a miscommunication somewhere, but I’ve never experienced that before, and I haven’t really seen that in the past.” It’s hardly acceptable.
“We don’t understand how on a live track marshals are permitted to run across the track like that. I have no idea why, but I’m sure there will be an explanation, “but it really can’t happen again.”
The International Automobile Federation (FIA), the organization’s governing body, is looking into the circumstances.
Race control was informed that debris was on the track at the apex of that corner following a turn one incident, according to the FIA.
Once all cars had passed, marshals were called and put on standby to enter the track and remove the debris.
The instructions to dispatch marshals were rescinded as soon as it became clear that Lawson had pitted, and a double yellow flag was displayed there.
