To advance to the second round of the World Grand Prix in Leicester, Luke Humphries won by a score of 2-0 over Nathan Aspinall.

Premier League champion Humphries won the first set 3-2, despite Aspinall recovering from a slow start with a “big fish” finish that included two treble 20s and a bullseye.

Aspinall struggled to get started with doubles as fellow Englishman Humphries took advantage and finished the second set with a brutal 156 finish, which was required for the double-in double-out format.

Humphries bounced back from a 3-0 deficit to win the second set, which gave him a chance to face Poland’s Krzysztof Ratajski, who defeated Martin Schindler in the second set 2-0.

“It was a big game,” he said. Humphries described Nathan as a “fabulous player” on Sky Sports.

He made a few entrance attempts before letting me in with that 156, which was a big chance to score in my favor.

They simply didn’t want to drop in because my scoring was a little off the mark.

“Hopefully I can recover on Wednesday and be better.”

In a match all about English, fifth seed James Wade was defeated 2-0 by German Niko Springer while fourth-seeded Stephen Bunting, who recently won the Swiss Darts Trophy for his sixth title of the year, was defeated by Joe Cullen.
