Wang Jianan, the reigning world champion long jumper from China, has been cleared of doping following a review of hospital CCTV footage.

Wang, 29, leapt 8.36 meters in Oregon in 2022, becoming the first Asian athlete to win world long jump gold.

He was found to have traces of terbutaline, a drug primarily used to treat and prevent breathing problems in patients with asthma, in an out-of-competition doping test in November of 2024.

The drug’s presence, according to the China Anti-Doping Agency (CDA), was brought on by passive inhalation of Wang while he was taking a relative a nebuliser in a hospital.

Wang was found not to be negligent or in error for the violation, according to Chinada.

The Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU), which analyzed Wang’s movements before his drug test using hospital security footage and patient records, reviewed the decision.

A independent scientific expert’s opinion was sought during the AIU investigation, who concluded that “a passive transfer of the substance to the athlete couldn’t be excluded.”
