Geordie Shore star Holly Hagan’s sister Darci died in October after mixing the drug, crystal MDMA, into her drink during a night out at Manchester’s Warehouse Project nightclub
Holly Hagan has revealed her harrowing final memories of her sister Darci as hospital staff fought to save her life.
The 33 year old Geordie Shore star’s sister Darci died at the age of 19 in October this year after an accidental drug overdose. Holly was devastated as she announced the death of her beloved sister on her social media.
Holly’s sister Darci Rose Gibson died 48 hours after taking crystal MDMA. Six weeks on from the tragedy, Holly has now spoken out about seeing her sister’s final hours as doctors fought to save her in hospital.
Recalling the harrowing moment she saw her sister in hospital after the accidental overdose, Holly tearfully said: “I opened the curtain, and I’ve never seen anything like that in my life and I hope no parent or no sibling ever has to see anything like that.
“She had tubes in her nose, in her mouth, she had bruises everywhere from where they had cannulas wherever they could put cannulas. Needles in her neck. She had blood pouring out of her nose, which they were continuously cleaning. She had blood pooling from her mouth.”
Holly added to the Daily Mail: “They actually taped her eyes down for us because her eyes… she looked dead. It was not a nice sight. There was machines covering the entire room – one of them helping her breathe, one of them on her heart, one of them on her kidneys – just trying their absolute best with all this technology to just keep her alive.”
Holly has also revealed the events which unfolded the night Holly’s sister went out with pals. The reality star explained her stepdad John had driven Darci and her best friend to Manchester for a night out – with Holly and her son Alpha-Jax planning to meet John and Darci the following day.
That night, Holly was woken to a ‘light knock’ on her door and saw she had 130 missed calls on her phone, in that moment her ‘heart dropped’. Holly revealed: “The first message I saw was in capital letters, saying, ‘We are with your sister, you need to get to Manchester Royal Infirmary right now, please call us back’, and that was at 2am. My whole body was in fight mode; I sat on the toilet shaking.”
Holly explained her sister Darci had taken crystal MDMA during the night out, something she had never taken before, and Darci was unaware of the drug’s deadly potential. Darci had previously experimented with drugs in the past, but had never taken MDMA in crystal form before.
Holly admits she now regrets not warning her sister to “please be careful” before her night out. Holly insisted Darci’s friends said she was “always so sensible”. The TV star revealed she doesn’t know ‘if there’s anything I could have done to change anything’.
She explained: “She’s in a dark club and being naïve and not realising how much a quantity is because she’s never taken a version of this drug before, she has poured it into her drink.
“Her friend said there was still a lot left but if you have seen that drug before you know it comes in powder and there are rocks in there as well. What happened is possibly the bigger rocks had gone into her drink, and it still looked like there was a lot left in the bag, but it was enough for it to be an overdose.”
Holly explained that after taking the drug, Darci felt unwell and vomited, but was ok to continue the night after being comforted by her boyfriend outside the club. However, 45 minutes later, Darci’s condition changed and she went into cardiac arrest, which saw medical staff at the nightclub rush to her aid in a bid to save Darci’s life.
She was rushed to Manchester Royal Infirmary in an ambulance, where, she suffered another cardiac arrest but was brought back with chest compressions. Darci’s heart was then beating out of rhythm and she was placed on dialysis because her kidneys had “completely packed up”.
Despite doctors efforts, Darci underwent a brain scan and a series of tests, which confirmed she was ‘100 per cent braindead’. Holly explained: “We sat in the room, me, my mam, my stepdad, the neurologist, and two nurses, and he said that basically, the MDMA had heated her body so much that it caused her muscles to spasm, and it released sodium, potassium, and it basically poisoned her.
“With her body heating up so much, her brain was swelling tremendously, but they didn’t know how much until they did the scan. They said that the swelling was very extreme and they presumed there would be no signs of life when they did the tests.”
