Former child actor Matt Prokop was reportedly taken into custody in Texas on Christmas Eve after being arrested on a charge of possession of child pornography and four misdemeanour charges
High School Musical 3 star Matt Prokop has been arrested on a charge of possession of child pornography and four misdemeanour charges, according to reports.
The former child star, 35, was reportedly taken into custody in Texas just before Christmas. The actor, who is best known for his role in Disney’s High School Musical 3, is said to have been arrested on Christmas Eve.
He was charged with aggravated assault of a family member with a weapon and second-degree felony possession of child pornography, among other charges. It’s currently unclear when he will appear in court to face the charges.
According to PEOPLE, his arrest follows allegations of abuse from his ex-girlfriend, Sarah Hyland. The pair had appeared in 2011’s Geek Charming. She accused Prokop of verbal and physical abuse during their five-year relationship.
Hyland claimed he had allegedly slammed her into a vehicle and choked her during an argument, according to court filings that were obtained by the publication. It’s said Modern Family star Julie Bowen intervened and helped Hyland end her relationship.
Hyland was granted a restraining order againt Prokop. As per her restraining order filing, Bowen’s intervention allegedly led Prokop to threaten to kill Hyland’s dog and burn down her house.
It was said Prokop was required to stay 100 yards away from her and her dog Barkley Bixby at all times following the assault claims. At the time Hyland stated in the documents: “His grip was so tight that I could not breathe or speak. I was scared and in fear for my life,” she stated in the documents.
In 2024, Hyland told Variety of the importance of speaking out: “For thousands of years now, we didn’t talk about it. The community hasn’t shared enough, I believe.
“And I feel that if we talk about it more, more women – and men and just human beings in general in abusive relationships – will feel more comfortable to be able to talk about it with their loved ones instead of letting their abuser isolate them from everyone, which is the first thing that they do, so that you don’t have that community.”
The former Love Island USA host also opened up to domestic violence survivors. She said painful memories don’t simply disappear, saying they sometimes remain “in that abused place of your soul.”
“It’s almost like you don’t wanna talk about it anymore,” Hyland told the publication at the time. “You want it to be done, and that’s that. I completely understand the dissociation pattern of it.”
Prokop’s has also starred in series such as Hannah Montana, The Office, Good Luck Charlie and Modern Family.
