Helen Mirren was a vision in pink as she picked up a lifetime achievement award and quipped that she hoped it was an ‘ongoing reflection of my career rather than a eulogy’

British national treasure Helen Mirren, 80, may be the first to shun conventional beauty standards – but she certainly showed off her age-defying beauty as she picked up a Golden Globes lifetime achievement award.

The Oscar winner turned heads in a custom, long-sleeved, figure-hugging pink Stella McCartney dress at the Golden Eve celebration.

She joined the likes of fellow award winner Sarah Jessica Parker at the event in Beverley Hills – a precursor to the Golden Globes, which takes place on Sunday January 11.

Presented with her special gong at the ceremony by Harrison Ford, who recalled first working with the actress on 1986’s The Mosquito Coast before reuniting with her again for the Paramount+ series 1923, while introducing her to the stage.

“We had three lovely children,” the actor said of their characters in The Mosquito Coast. “The script required all of us refer to Helen as ‘Mother.’ Forty years later, I got to work with her again when Taylor Sheridan cast her in 1923.” He quipped, “I was an afterthought.”

Ford called the British icon an “undeniable screen presence who brings to every scene a powerful commitment to narrative and character”, Helen became the 71st recipient of the Cecil B Demille Award for lifetime achievement.

Mirren bagged an Oscar in 2007 for her stunning portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in The Queen – but has also won three Golden Globes for roles in both TV and film, as well as a host of other Emmy, SAG, Bafta and Tony Awards.

The actress, who was made a Dame in 2003 and is married to US film director Taylor Hackford, 81, joins a hallowed group of DeMille Award recipients since 1952, including Sidney Poitier, Meryl Streep, Barbra Streisand, Viola Davis, Morgan Freeman, Tom Hanks and Jeff Bridges.

During her acceptance speech, Dame Helen said: “The DeMille Award was described to me as a career recognition. But I prefer to think of it as a life lived, a life survived, a life enjoyed, a life sweated, and a life carried on, hopefully. And given that hope, I prefer to think of this as an ongoing reflection of my career rather than a eulogy.”

Golden Eve also saw Sex and the City actress Sarah Jessica Parker, accompanied by husband Matthew Broderick and son James, honoured for her career television achievements as she received the Carol Burnett Award. The main Golden Globes ceremony takes place on January 11, hosted for the second time by comedian Nikki Glaser.
