Call the Midwife star Helen George has had a love life as eventful as her character Trixie Franklin’s on the BBC One show

Helen George has had her fair share of romantic ups and downs – from a divorce to a romance with a divorced dad of two.

The Birmingham-born actress is one of the UK’s beloved stars thanks to her role in Call the Midwife. The popular BBC period drama, which started in 2012, follows a group of midwives, portrayed by a bunch of talented actors, working in East End London during the late 1950s and 1960s.

Helen has played Trixie Franklin for 14 years and been involved in several memorable moments on the programme. However, away from the TV sets, mum-of-two Helen’s love life hasn’t exactly been a walk in the park. Here, we’re taking a look inside her rollercoaster love life…

Helen’s divorce from actor Oliver Boot

Helen was previously married to actor Oliver Boot. The pair met while filming BBC’s Hotel Babylon together in 2008, but didn’t start dating until a few years later. In 2011, they tied the knot only to announce their split in 2015.

Their separation occurred just weeks before Helen took to the dance floor in the BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing in 2015. In 2023, Helen spoke about the divorce process and called it “awful”. She told The Times: “Going through a divorce is awful.

“I’d been asked to do Strictly and, strange as it sounds, I thought it would be like a sort of therapy after my divorce. I’d spoken to quite a few people who said how it really helped them through difficult times.”

She added: “You are focused on this one thing, it’s an emotional journey. I was so naive that I thought no one would be interested in me, so that was a shock. I soon realised I didn’t want all that celebrity stuff.”

Helen found love with Call the Midwife co-star

Shortly after her split from Oliver, Helen started a relationship with Jack Ashton, whom she met on the set of Call The Midwife in 2015, a year after he joined the cast as Reverend Tom Hereward.

The two actors fell in love while filming the 2016 Christmas Special in South Africa. Going from strength to strength, Helen and Jack welcomed their first child, Wren, in 2017, and their youngest, Lark, was born in 2021.

Talking about their romance, Helen told Stella Magazine: “It was a slow process. All of us on the show are mates. We all hang out together and Jack always really makes me laugh.” Gushing over Jack she said: “He’s so unbelievably kind and down to earth, and he’s such a great dad.”

However, Helen and Jack’s romance came to an unexpected end in July after seven years together. Helen shared with The Mirror: “Some months ago, we separated. Our two beautiful girls remain the focus and I respectfully ask for privacy for this next chapter.”

Helen’s new romance with divorced dad of two

Helen is currently dating Dan Innes. It is believed Helen found happiness with Dan after connecting on the dating platform Raya.

Helen confirmed her new romance on Valentine’s Day last year when she shared the evening with Dan at the riverside restaurant, The Watermans Arms, in Barnes.

According to Dan’s LinkedIn profile, he has over 25 years of experience in real estate and attended Newcastle University. Dan is currently the managing director and founder of real estate consultancy firm Innesco, according to his Instagram profile.

Like Helen, Dan is also a divorced dad to two children. Dan was first married in 2008 to partner Kate Wette but split in 2016. The pair share two children, who are 14 and 12.

Talking to The Mail’s You magazine in December, Helen opened up about her new romance and said: “It’s a very happy relationship. It’s lovely to be with someone outside the industry. I’m not defined by my job, and I’m really interested in meeting the people he works with.”
