Wilder held the WBC title from 2015 to 2020 and was once the most feared puncher in world boxing.
The 39-year-old American has won 43 fights, including 42 knockouts, four losses, and one draw, after Tyson Fury defeated him in an electric trio fight.
Six months after Joseph Parker’s point loss, Zhilei Zhang stopped him in June.
Wilder’s attempts to reclaim the title of world champion were hampered by those defeats, which also scuppered plans for the long-awaited fight against British Anthony Joshua.
The Bronze Bomber will face American Herndon, 37, who has won 24 fights and lost five of his. Wilder’s team confirmed to BBC Sport.
