Cryotherapy for your hair looks set to be a big beauty trend for 2026, freezing strands to -16℃ deliver incredible shine and hydration. Here’s what happened when we tries it out…
As a beauty editor, the start of the year is always an exciting time for me, as I hear about lots of new products, treatments and trends hoping to be the next big thing in the beauty world. And one in particular certainly piqued my interest when I heard about it: hair cryotherapy.
With cryotherapy already popular in the health and wellness space, Brazilian brand Hair.TOXX has now applied this technology to hair, using intensively nourishing products and below-freezing temperatures to repair, rehydrate and add shine to strands in need of TLC – up to 264% more shine, in fact, Hair.TOXX claims.
With blonde hair always tricky to get to reflect the light, I headed to Haug London Haus salon in London’s Fitzrovia – the first in the UK to introduce this innovative treatment – to see what effect it would have on my dull, heavily bleached hair…
How does Hair.TOXX work?
Hair.TOXX is a bespoke repair treatment that uses products rich in natural actives from the Amazon, which are locked in using a clever cryotherapy tool that reaches temperatures of -16℃.
Locks are first washed twice using a Hair.TOXX shampoo suited to your particular hair type (skipping conditioner), before a serum and mask are mixed together to create a bespoke treatment, tailored to your hair’s needs; a repairing mix of Hair.TOXX’s Revitalizing Serum and Protective Mask was used on me. This will then be combed through sections of your strands throughout the treatment.
Next comes the fun part: after the mask is applied, the section of hair is passed over twice with what looks like your typical pair of straighteners, attached to a large white box. The difference, however, is that instead of the plates being hot, they’re super-cold – a chilly -16℃. You can even see the frost on the plates, like that found inside a freezer. This action firmly seals the cuticles, locking in the intensive treatment deep within each strand’s cortex without altering your actual hair type (unlike a Brazilian blow dry, for example, it won’t straighten curly hair).
And if you can’t stand cold, don’t worry about any discomfort here; your hair does feels cold to the touch, but you don’t feel this on your scalp or shoulders, unlike if you were to brave a cold plunge or icy blast under the shower.
To finish, the treatment is rinsed out and your hair is blow dried into your desired style. Hair.TOXX also does a lightweight oil, which can be applied before or after blow drying if required.
The result
Performing the Hair.TOXX treatment took about 10-15 minutes, plus the usual blow drying time, and once finished, I couldn’t believe how incredibly smooth and soft my hair felt – something that’s really tricky to achieve on hair that’s bleached as regularly as mine is.
What was most impressive, however, was the shine. Blonde hair is notoriously tricky to get to reflect the light, but my hair glistened like nothing I’d ever seen before. Haug’s apprentice Jodie, who performed the treatment on me, described the effect as ‘sparkly’, and she was spot on – it looked like I’d had super-fine strands of tinsel scattered throughout my hair, especially on the strands of fresh blonde (I’d also had a colour refresh by the brilliant Siobhan, Haug London Haus co-founder and creative director, beforehand).
Haug co-founder and salon director Philipp Haug says the results should last 3-5 weeks if you use the aftercare products provided, and while I don’t think it lasted quite that long on me (I do wash my hair every other day), I definitely noticed an improvement in its condition and manageability in the weeks that followed.
What hair type is Hair.TOXX suitable for?
Hair.TOXX can be used on all hair types, but it’s especially good on curly or coarse hair, as their cuticles are naturally more open, Philipp explains.
Philipp says that Hair.TOXX could also be used on hair extensions if the sections of tape were avoided, however is it best done on natural hair. If you think your extensions need this treatment, they probably need replacing, he advises.
