According to the nation’s football association, applications to Pep Guardiola and Xavi Hernandez to take charge of India have both turned out to be fakes.
Emails from the two coaches, according to the All India Football Federation (AIFF), were not authentic.
Reports in the Indian and Spanish press claimed Subrata Paul, India’s technical director, acknowledged Xavi’s interest in the position earlier this week.
However, the AIFF released a statement on Saturday, claiming that they had received fake applications.
Pep Guardiola and Xavi Hernandez, two Spanish coaches, sent the applications via email to AIFF. The authenticity of their applications was not confirmed, and it has since become apparent that the emails were fake,” a statement read.
Manolo Marquez, the catalan coach, stepped down as India manager earlier this month so that he could concentrate on FC Goa, his club side.
The AIFF received 170 applications, according to the AIFF, who made public announcements about the position.
Since leaving Barcelona in May 2024, Xavi hasn’t coached, and Guardiola’s contract at Manchester City runs until 2027.
India is 133rd in the Fifa men’s world rankings, having never qualified for a World Cup and finished last overall in the 2023 Asian Cup.
