Gov Newsom says Trump is sending California National Guard troops to Oregon

After a judge temporarily blocked the governor’s office from sending the state’s guard to Portland, Oregon, California Governor Gavin Newsom has announced that US President Donald Trump will send 300 California National Guard members to Oregon.

Democrats’ Newsom vowed to fight the deployment in court on Sunday, calling it “a breathtaking abuse of the law and power.”

In response to Trump’s protests on Saturday, a federal judge appointed by the Trump administration in Oregon temporarily blocked the administration’s plan to deploy the Oregon National Guard there to protect federal property.

Trump’s first term as president led by US District Judge Karin Immergut, who argued that the city’s relatively small protests did not support the deployment of federalized forces and that it could harm Oregon’s state sovereignty.

Immergut wrote that “this country has a longstanding and foundational tradition of resistance to government overreach, particularly when it involves military infiltration into civil affairs.” This is a country of constitutional law, not martial law, according to her later statement.

Federal intervention expanding

The deployment of national guards to Portland, Oregon, which Trump describes as being riddled with crime, would be the most recent instance of his use of federal aid.

Trump has deployed troops in 10 cities since the start of his second term, including Baltimore, Maryland, Memphis, Tennessee, the District of Columbia, New Orleans, Louisiana, and Oakland, San Francisco, Los Angeles, California.

Over Newsom’s request, Trump ordered the deployment of guard soldiers and active-duty Marines to Los Angeles over the summer. After a federal judge determined that the president’s use of the guard was likely against the law, he sued and won a temporary block.

In August, National Guard troops who were “as a last resort” began carrying weapons and were authorized to use force on Washington, DC’s streets.

Trump authorized the deployment of 300 Illinois National Guard personnel to protect Chicago’s assets and federal officers on Saturday.

Abigail Jackson, a spokesman for the White House, confirmed that the president authorized the use of Illinois National Guard members. She cited what she called “ongoing violent riots and lawlessness” that local leaders haven’t stopped.

Trump has called the former a “war zone” and suggested an apocalyptic force was required to solve problems in both Portland and Chicago as cities that are rife with crime and unrest.
