GB’s Burrage begins qualifying bid with strong win

Jodie Burrage, a Brit, started her quest for the US Open main draw, losing just four games.

In the opening round of qualifying in New York, Burrage, 26, defeated Romania’s Patricia Maria Tig 6-4, 6-0.

The 149-year-old will next face Arantxa Rus, the 18th seed, in a race to reach the US Open main draw for the second time.

Billy Harris and Burrage are competing in the second round, beating James Kent Trotter 6-1, 6-2, but Johannus Monday lost to France’s Harold Mayot 7-5, 6-3.

On Monday, Dan Evans and Jay Clarke will hold their campaigns at Flushing Meadows.

To be eligible for the tournament’s main singles draw, which begins on Sunday, players must have won three matches in qualifying.
