28 years later, the men’s 4x400m relay team from Great Britain won their first gold medal at the 1997 World Athletics Championships.

Roger Black, Iwan Thomas, Jamie Baulch, and Mark Richardson finished second to the USA at the Athens competition, which included Mark Hylton, who ran in the heats, and Iwan Thomas.

However, due to an anti-doping violation committed by team member Antonio Pettigrew, the Americans were later expelled from the title.

At Saturday’s Diamond League meeting in a sold-out London Stadium, Englishmen Black, Richardson, and Hylton as well as Welsh duo Thomas and Baulch were sadly presented with gold medals by the team, earning the British line-up world championships.

Cherry Alexander, UK Athletics’ strategic lead for major events, “We’re proud to be able to give these athletes their moment in front of a home crowd.”
