For the February Winter Olympics in Italy, Great Britain has chosen just one short-track speed skater.

Niall Treacy, who finished 27th in the 1, 000m at Beijing 2022, has been selected for the 500m, 1, 000m and 1, 500m in Milan and Cortina.

The 25-year-old said, “It’s super exciting.”

“I’m really happy with that,” he says, “because it was always the goal to travel farther after Beijing.”

When world champion Elise Christie was viewed as a hope for an Olympic medal at the 2018 Winter Olympics and Paralympics, short track speed skating received £4.8 million in funding from UK Sport, but it lost after the Games.

Performance director for British ice skating, Jon Eley, observed: “It is a far cry from those days of success.

They all receive self-funded income, which is a clear indication of how diligently they are in their training. It involves getting stuck in and rolling your sleeves up.
